Uninstall and Reinstall GPU Driver

A corrupted graphics card driver is one of the most common sources of game stuttering in Black Desert Online that I’ve discovered while optimizing clients’ PCs. New files are supposed to overwrite the old ones when you update your GPU drivers, but sometimes, this won’t happen, causing file conflicts and corruption. What you want to do here is to remove any files related to your graphics card driver from your computer and then perform a clean installation of the new latest GPU driver.

To uninstall your graphics driver, you will need to do the following steps:

  • Download Display Driver Uninstaller.
  • Boot into Safe Mode and uninstall the current driver using DDU.
  • Boot back into normal mode and download and install the latest GPU driver for your card.

Optimize GPU Driver settings

Optimizing GPU driver settings can help improve gaming performance and graphics quality and eliminate stuttering if all graphics settings are configured correctly.

You need to disable all power-saving features and allow your graphics card to perform at 100% when needed. Below you can find two guides on properly optimizing your graphics driver settings for both AMD and NVidia graphics cards.

Reset or Revert Overclocks

GPU and CPU overclocking can help to improve gaming performance, reduce stuttering, and increase overall system performance and stability.

However, if these overclocks are set too high, then it can lead to instability, crashes, or even hardware damage. By resetting your overclocks, you can ensure that your components are running at their default speeds, eliminating the possibility of micro stuttering due to being over-stressed.

Enable Hardware-Accelerated GPU scheduling

Hardware-Accelerated GPU scheduling is a Windows feature for modern GPUs, that allows the Graphics Card to better manage its resources and prioritize tasks that need them the most.

Go into your Windows search bar and type “Graphics settings“, choose the option available, and enable “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling”.

If you are streaming Black Desert Online on OBS or Streamlabs, then don’t enable this setting because it can cause lags and micro stutters in your stream and recording.

This feature alone can sometimes eliminate game stuttering issues.

Use An Advanced Windows Power Plan

I’ve tested every single power plan available, and I can say that the one working the best, especially for Black Desert Online, is the Bitsum Highest Performance Power Plan.

The Bitsum Highest Performance Power Plan is a custom power plan for Windows that is designed to maximize performance and enhance processor power management capabilities. The plan applies various tweaks to the operating system, including disabling certain power-saving features and setting processor and graphics card power limits to the maximum.

As a result, the Bitsum Highest Performance Power Plan can help to improve system performance and eliminate Black Desert Online micro stuttering.

However, it is important to note that the plan can also lead to increased energy consumption and reduced battery life, even on new gaming laptops.

Therefore, it is only recommended for use on any desktop gaming PC.

If you are on a laptop, make sure to switch to your default power plan when you are not playing games.

Disable Sound Enhancements

Windows sound enhancements can sometimes cause major stuttering and freezes in games like Black Desert Online.

Find the little sound icon on your toolbar, right-click on it, and click Sounds.

Update Motherboard BIOS

It is always recommended to be running on the latest BIOS version of your Motherboard since manufacturers provide frequent updates(every few months) to address issues and fix stability problems, micro stuttering, frame rate drops, lags, or even enhance performance in some cases. So definitely one of the things you want to do if you want to get rid of your Black Desert Online stuttering issue.

In the following link, you can precise instructions on how to update your bios to the latest version.

Enter flash mode into BIOS

Optimizing BIOS Settings

Since this guide is primarily for people who are not PC experts, I will keep everything straight to the point.

We will only change basic settings that make the most significant difference in your system’s performance and possibly fix micro stuttering in Black Desert Online.

Optimize AMD system BIOS Settings

  • Make sure XMP or D.O.C.P is set to Profile 1 / Enabled.
  • Precision Boost Overdrive: Enabled
  • Re-size BAR support: Enabled
  • Find the options for FAN controls, and if you have a water cooler make sure to set it to 100% at all times, as well as optimize the rest of the coolers to work on higher speeds to keep temperatures as low as possible.

Optimize Intel system BIOS settings

The Intel settings below can be found under your BIOS’s CPU features/CPU configuration/Overclocking/Ai Tweaker tabs. If it’s your first time entering BIOS, it may take you some time, but I am pretty sure you will find them easily.

  • Make sure XMP or D.O.C.P is set to Profile 1 / Enabled.
  • Intel SpeedStep: Disabled
  • Intel Speed Shift Technology: Disabled
  • Intel C-state: disabled
  • Turbo Mode: Enabled
  • Intel Turbo Boost: Disabled
  • CPU Ratio Offset when running AVX: 0
  • Re-Size BAR support: Enabled
  • Find the options for FAN controls, and if you have a water cooler make sure to set it to 100% at all times, as well as optimize the rest of the coolers to work on higher speeds to keep temperatures as low as possible.

Once you are done with all the BIOS settings, you can go ahead and save these settings as a Profile and then find the option to Save & Exit BIOS.

Check & Monitor Temperatures

If none of the above steps helped with micro stuttering in Black Desert Online, there is a good chance that stuttering may be due to either your CPU or GPU overheating. If your CPU or GPU gets hot while playing Black Desert Online, it will start downclocking itself in order to drop the temperatures. That means that the performance will drop instantly, causing FPS drops and stuttering.

A good practice would be to download a monitoring software like HWINFO and a stress test software like OCCT , and perform a stress test on your CPU and GPU and check the temperatures. If you notice temperatures going extremely high very quickly, it’s time to clean up your PC case, CPU cooler, and GPU fans, add extra fans, or apply some new thermal paste.

Scan for Malware and Miners

One common issue I’ve encountered while doing my PC optimization service on other people’s computers is that they have miners and sometimes even malware running on their computers, and they haven’t even noticed.

Hidden crypto miners and malware, apart from eating up your CPU and GPU resources, also create backend connections from your PC to other servers or PCs to transfer data. So if you have stuttering in Black Desert Online, this is something that you should take a look at ASAP!

Apart from your internet connection and computer resources being used, there is also a high chance that your gaming accounts, bank accounts, cards, and any personal data you have stored on your PC are at risk.

Install Malwarebytes and then open it. Click on Scanner -> Advanced Scanners -> Configure scan, and select the option scan for rootkits and also, on the right side, select all your drives and click on scan. This scan may take a lot of time, but it can save you from very unwanted situations.

Once the scan is done, quarantine everything and restart your PC.

Disable automatic scans, and you should be good to go!

Optimize Windows Settings

Optimizing Windows settings like Xbox game bar, Game Mode, Game DVR, and scaling options, are essential to ensure no Windows settings are causing game stuttering.

Windows Game Bar

Go to your search bar and type Xbox game bar, click on it, and turn both options OFF.

Game Mode

While you are on the Xbox game bar tab, on your left side, you should see Game Mode, click on it, and make sure to enable it.

The Windows Game Mode feature was not working as intended on previous Windows builds and versions, but that seems to be fixed on the latest versions, and it’s running smoothly.

Repair/Reinstall Black Desert Online

Sometimes Black Desert Online files get corrupted and can cause many issues like micro stuttering, FPS drops, unstable FPS, or even crashes and disconnects from servers. Go ahead and do a complete repair of the game files without interrupting the process, or even better, if you got the time, do a fresh installation of Black Desert Online.
