Many users have reported facing Discord Black Screen when trying to open the application or screen sharing. In this post, I have listed ten methods to fix the black screens on Discord. The methods are listed from the highest possibility(Method 1) to solve your issue to the lowest(Method 10).
If the first few methods don’t fix the black screens you are experiencing, do not give up. I recommend you try every single method listed in this guide, and I am pretty sure you will solve your issue with the black screens you are experiencing Discord and Discord’s screen sharing feature.
Method 1: Clear Discord cache folder
On your keyboard, press “Windows key + R“, the run box will pop up. Inside the run box type, “%appdata%” and hit enter.
Now, look for the Discord folder, once you find it, right-click on it and select Delete.
You have successfully deleted the Discords cache. You can now restart Discord and check if the black screen is still there.
Method 2: Turn on/off Hardware Acceleration
Open Discord and click on the Gear icon at the bottom left part of your Discord window to access settings.
Now, navigate to Appearance, scroll down and Disable Hardware acceleration.
If the Hardware Acceleration option is already disabled, you can try to enable it and check if the black screens persist.
Method 3: Disable ‘Use our latest technology to capture your screen’ Option
Navigate to Discord Settings as you did on the previous step. On the left panel, go to the Voice & Video tab and look for the “Use our latest technology to capture your screen” option. Click on the button on the left of the option to disable it.
Restart discord and check if the black screens are gone. If not, don’t get disappointed. Follow the next methods.
Method 4: Disable Video Codec
Go to Gear Icon -> Voice & Video and look for VIDEO CODEC. Disable all the settings under the VIDEO CODEC tab and restart Discord.
Method 5: Run Discord with Admin Privileges
Right-click on Discord’s shortcut, and select Properties.
Navigate to the Compatibility tab, and check the box on the left side of “Run this program as an administrator“. Click Apply and then click OK.
Quit discord, and double-click on the shortcut to open it again.
Method 6: Run-on compatibility mode
Right-click on the Discord shortcut and choose “Properties“. Navigate to the Compatibility tab, and you should see the option ” Run this program in compatibility mode for:” check the box and choose a Windows version older than your current one. If you are on Windows 10, I recommend you choose Windows 7. Once you do that, click Apply and OK.
Method 7: Update your graphics driver
There is a good chance that outdated graphics card drivers or even some of your GPU settings may be causing the black screens on Discord. To avoid this, you can follow my two video guides below to update and optimize your AMD graphics card or NVidia settings.
Method 8: Disable High Packet Priority
Navigate to Discord -> Gear Icon(User Settings) -> Voice & Video and look for Quality of Service option. Under the Quality of Service, you can see Enable Quality of Service High Packet Priority. Make sure to disable it and restart Discord.
Method 9: Disabling Aero Theme
If none of the above methods didn’t work for you, then you may consider disabling the Aero Theme since it is known that it causes errors with a lot of Windows applications and features. Here is a complete guide on how you can disable Aero Theme.

Once the uninstall is completed, press “Windows icon + R” on your keyboard, and type “%appdata%” and hit Enter.
Look for the Discord folder, select it and press the Delete button on your keyboard.
You have successfully uninstalled Discord from your computer. You now want to go ahead and download the latest version of Discord.
