AMD Cool’n’Quiet: Everything You Need To Know in 2022

AMD Cool & Quiet is a CPU power-saving technology with dynamic frequency-scaling capabilities, which AMD introduced first in its Athlon XP processor series in 2001. AMD Cool & Quiet, as you can guess by its name, it aims to keep your system cool(low temps) and quiet(less noisy). It achieves lower temperatures and noise by lowering the processor speed and voltages when needed.

Cool & Quiet is not a technology/feature/setting for AMD Ryzen processors. However, nowadays, some motherboards may choose to retain that menu option. So, what AMD Cool & Quiet does on a given motherboard will vary depending on the Manufacturer because they decide what it’s supposed to do.

That doesn’t mean that everybody should have it enabled. Below, you will find everything you need to know about AMD Cool & Quiet and enable or disable it depending on your needs.

Pros and Cons of using AMD Cool n Quiet

AMD Cool & Quiet: Enabled or Disabled?

The most important question is: Should you enable or disable AMD Cool & Quiet?

If you are a casual user or just using your PC for lightweight work, browsing, and occasionally gaming, your best bet is to enable it. On the other hand, if you use your computer mainly for gaming, rendering, heavy CPU bound software, or you either want to overclock your CPU manually or use Precision Boost Overdrive. I would highly recommend you disable it to achieve the maximum performance possible.

Does AMD Cool n Quiet Affect performance?

Yes, AMD Cool n Quiet does affect performance a lot, especially on heavy CPU tasks like gaming or rendering. People who say it doesn’t probably haven’t done extensive testing on many different applications and games.

In some cases, you may not even notice a performance difference because of how each motherboard manufacturer configures Cool n Quiet to work, but for the most part, disabling AMD Cool n Quiet will allow your CPU to perform at its maximum potential.

How To Enable or Disable AMD Cool n Quiet?

Different motherboards will have Cool n Quiet listed in another place. But whatever your motherboard might be, you should be able to locate Cool n Quiet under CPU Features/Overclocking/CPU Configuration in BIOS.

The CPU features should be under the Overclocking settings tab, AI Tweaker tab, or OC Tweaker tab.
